Learning a language is a daunting task. However, if you keep practising, you can definitely learn and master the language. Same, in case you want to become proficient in fluent spoken English, whether you want to crack your dream job or you want to travel abroad, spoken English and spoken English skills are mandatory.

Although, even after becoming proficient in English at some point of time you may feel you get stuck and are not making progress. But you don’t have to worry about that. There are lots of scopes and opportunities for learning.

Start Reading

Reading is very essential to improve your spoken English skills and it also breaks the barrier of nervousness while speaking. You should also change the reading material from time to time. Suppose, you are reading the same newspaper for a whole week, then the words in that particular will get into your mind and you cannot notice any mistakes while reading that. That doesn't mean that you have overcome your spoken English barrier. You have to change the reading material to notice your problems and mistakes.

One more thing you can do while reading is, read those articles that attract your interest. Reading something that doesn't attract your interest will lead you to boring reading activities. You will not learn anything and hence it will not help you in any way. So, it is always advisable to choose your reading material wisely. Always try to read a wide range of story books- that will help you to come across new words and structure of writing.

Read Speedily:

Try to read the articles at a speed, so that the words get caught in your eyes, and whenever you are reading those words further, you don't need to wait and singly read them. You can also follow the below-mentioned tips:

  • Set a particular time for reading a particular article or a book, for example, if you are reading a 100-word article then set a time of 30 seconds, that I will complete the article in 30 seconds or less.
  • Secondly, read the same paragraph in that limited time and check whether you are missing some words or reading some words wrongly. But do this full process in that limited time.
  • Thirdly, read the whole thing again and you can read it a little bit slower but you have to read it by understanding it fully this time.

Start Writing

Test Your Skill Through Writing:

As we discussed in the above point, reading is important, just like that, start writing today! Whatever you are reading, start writing it down in a notebook, this will help you to remember the way of writing and the words. If you start writing then you can easily find out the mistakes that you are making, and try to express your feelings through your writing. Most of the time it happens that what you are thinking you are not able to express while speaking, and writing will help you to express yourself.

Practise Formal Writing:

Engaging in academic writing practice is an additional strategy. This category includes articles, presentations, emails, and reports. It's likely that, even if you speak English as your first language, you have encountered academic writing in the language while attending college.

A few excellent writing advice for academic English include brushing up on basic vocabulary, avoiding contractions, and studying grammatical structures. For instance, you can alter terms like good to superb and so on while editing your work.

Additionally, there are a ton of excellent internet tools available to support academic writers. You can still benefit from these tools if you're not enrolled in an academic program.

Learn to Edit Your Writing:

You should learn how to edit your writing and go through your writing whenever you complete writing. While going through your writing, you will come across a lot of mistakes and then correct those mistakes. This is a continuous process and it will help you to learn the appropriate words that you should use while writing a meaningful sentence.

Translate and Write What You Hear:

This is also a very effective way to learn spoken English and hear anything that can be sports commentary or podcasts as mentioned above. Note that in a notebook whatever you listen to, just translate the words and write it down. Whether it makes sense or not doesn't matter. It will provide you with an idea of how much you can understand what you are listening to. You'll also come to know whether you are understanding based on overall or any particular paragraph.

Translate anything and everything that you hear, and write it down in a notebook word by word, that will help you to understand the different forms of words, which words connect to other words and which words will blend.

Test Your Improvement by Writing to Different People:

After practising for some days or more, try to write demo letters to people, for example, you are writing a letter to your friend, grandmother or your concerned municipal corporation. This will help you to become fluent in spoken English. Practising this process will also help you to write with proper words and meaning and will help you in your writing skills as well.

Listen to Podcasts and Sports Commentary:

Nowadays podcasts are a remarkable way to improve your spoken English skills. One of the best things about a podcast is you can listen to it anywhere any time you want. While listening to a podcast try to listen attentively to the way they are speaking and their accent. This will help you to improve your listening skills as well as your understanding of the words that can be used in a variety of ways to form a meaningful sentence.

After listening to those words, you can also use those words while speaking and this will grab the attention of the people with whom you are speaking. They will understand that you are taking some coaching from an international course.

If you are addicted to sports then you can also listen to their commentary, this will also help you to improve your spoken English skills. Listening to commentary helps, I have experienced this on my own.

Watch English Videos:

Nowadays there are a lot of English videos available on the web, from where you can learn spoken English, and these videos are very helpful, as these videos help you to listen to unique words and enrich your vocabulary. You can also browse YouTube for this kind of video, and there are a lot of English channels in which you can interact with their audience. Interacting with their audience means you are interacting with the native speakers and this is very impactful.

Start with watching subtitles, and after you feel that you can understand without the subtitles, then try to switch off the subtitles and listen to them. After switching off the subtitles, if you can understand what are they saying then you can understand that you are improving day by day.

Get Used to Different Accents:

The fact that different places have varied dialects and accents makes learning any language difficult.

Even though you can listen to Americans with no trouble at all, are you proficient in the Australian accent? How about the accent from Northern Ireland? If you are still having trouble understanding some accents, work on developing your listening comprehension skills.

These days, it's simple to locate full-length films with actors that have the accent you want to work on, or even YouTube videos narrated by people from all over the world.

Challenge Yourself:

Similar to grammar, most language learners know far more words than they do. But there's no excuse for not using the words you've made the effort to learn! Once more, it's critical to step outside of your comfort zone and experiment with unfamiliar words. It is possible to practise vocabulary in various contexts. For instance, you may start by writing down a single new word that you wish to become proficient in several sentences. The next time you write for practise, extend your writing and use more complex synonyms for a few of the terms in each paragraph.

Be sure to adhere to the definitions of any new terms you employ. You must understand the definition of the word and how to use it correctly; otherwise, you will be on the wrong path of learning.

Take Feedback and Rectifications From Others:

After studying for some time, when you think that you have improved to some extent then go outside and speak with others, or participate in public debates.

It's high time to make English a part of your life day by day. In this competitive era English is one of the primary and required eligibility criteria to get a job. You can also get rejected if you can't speak English fluently. Your communication skills can decide your career growth. It might seem a bit weird but it is the fact. In this article, we will get to know how you can enhance your English speaking skills. Take this challenge to enhance your English speaking skills and don't take it as homework.

Start Speaking

This is one of the most effective ways to enhance your English speaking power. Whatever you are learning every day, start speaking and using those words whenever you speak. You might speak wrong English, but believe me that doesn’t even matter.

Most English speakers make mistakes while they start speaking, and it will help you to know about your mistakes and you can rectify those mistakes day by day. Suppose, you are learning new words every day and you are not using those words and thinking that I will use the words later.

I hope almost every reader who is reading this blog watched the movie “Bang Bang” there was a dialogue you remembered where Hrithik told Katrina “Wo ekdin kab aayega? Pura zindagi aese na bit jaaye!”

You can also face the same situation if you don’t speak regularly and keeping the newly learnt words with yourself.

Let's go through some Basic English exercises and additional resources to improve your Spoken English skills.

11 Tips and Advanced English Resources To Improve English Vocabulary

1. Read English Daily:

There is no straight-bracket formula that you have to read any particular book. Read anything you want, read any article or section of newspaper that you want, that grasp your interest. Make reading a daily practice. You can read

  • Online News
  • Online PDFs
  • Online Books
  • Recipes
  • Blogs

Focus on observing grammatical structures, learning and memorising spelling and vocabulary acquisition. Whenever you are reading anything read it loud because this can help and guide you with your pronunciation muscles and speaking. It will also help you to memorise the information in a better way.

2. Write English Regularly:

If you are not sure what to write if it feels lethargic to write. Make sure what you write attracts your enjoyment. Just write anything you want that can be,

  • A list of list whom you want to thank for your success
  • Writing out if anything makes you feel worried
  • Write a daily diary about your day. This can minimise your stress

Start thinking in English and start writing in English. Write aloud to help you think more clearly and structure your writing.

3. Listen to English:

Listening comprehension plays a vital role in enhancing your English speaking skills. So, we want to make sure that we're giving this skill some time to shine. Some ideas for listening materials are the following:

  • Listen to the English songs of your favourite singer or genre.
  • Podcasts of your choice
  • Audiobooks that draw your interest and the topics that you love to listen to.

Connected speech, training your ear to prosody, stress patterns, and intonation, and learning new words and expressions.

4. Watch English Movies and Videos:

Out of all these, you might find this process easy because you can watch anything that is in the English language. While travelling on a bus or train you can tune into any episode that is in English. And this can help you to grasp the language faster.  You can also tune in to watch:

  • YouTube Videos to learn something
  • You can watch a TedTalk episode with subtitles.
  • You can also watch a web course lesson that you want to follow
  • Watch some free webinars that you have signed up for.

While watching anything in English, kindly focus on listening comprehension, learning communication gestures, how to talk, facial expressions, and hand movements.

Now the final step that you should follow while enhancing your English communication skills:

Most people find this step to be the toughest and most challenging habit to practise regularly. The result of doing speaking practise is that you can practise it anywhere and anytime even when you are entering into online communities and having virtual communication.

Hop online and join a forum like Google Meet or Zoom meeting where you can have and see all the conversations in the comments section. Or you can jump in online for a Zoom meeting or Skype call, and can speak in English while holding a virtual book club meeting! The point is that you can practise your speaking skills in person or the virtual mode. Some examples include:

  • Making small talk with strangers
  • Chatting with your subordinates in your office
  • Joining an online community
  • Joining a book club

There are some things that you can try to enhance your English speaking skills. Doing the things daily that are listed above can surely increase your speaking skills and your ability to talk confidently in English.

5. Use Idioms and Expressions While You Speak:

Suppose you are speaking on a regular basis, but you are bored of speaking similar words every time, this can also happen the person who is listening to you gets bored of listening same words every time, in that case you can start using idioms while speaking and this will make you speaking attractive to the person who is listening to you. Also don’t speak flat just like you have memorised anything and you are just speaking for the sake of speaking. Use your expressions, body language and movement of hands and eyes properly and accurately to connect with the listener who is listening to you.

This will make the person feel more interested about what you are speaking, and they will listen to you attentively. This will also make an impact on them about the things you are saying. Just be cool, don’t fumble, speak solely and start using idioms and body language.

6. Work on Your Pronunciation:

Pronunciation plays a very big role in speaking, if your pronunciation is good enough then you will be able to clear your point more efficiently and effectively before anyone. You can practise your pronunciation in front of a closed mirror, as there will be no one to judge you.

For example, if you are speaking a particular line and you are using newly learnt words and idioms then there is a high chance that you make a mistake in pronunciation, that doesn’t mean you will leave speaking or stop using idioms. You will search the pronunciation of that particular word across the globe and you will learn the accent and pronunciation of that particular word and again you will start your English speaking by using the same words without fear.

Just keep one thing in mind that there is no U-turn, you will make mistakes and you have to overcome that by learning the correct words and pronunciation. Learning spoken English is a continuous process and you have to be on it. You cannot achieve everything over-night, be patient and just be on the track, this is how you can improve your advanced English speaking skills.

7. Practise English Speaking Skills With Native Speakers:

Nowadays there are a lot of opportunities out there to advance your English speaking skills. You can make friends on social media who live abroad and who is also a native speaker and his/her mother tongue is English. This will help you a lot, believe me.

Start speaking with native speakers as they are already native speakers and you can follow their accent and body language while they speak and believe me, this process will help you a lot and this method works like magic.

You can improve so much that you can easily crack your dream job or you can travel abroad without any kind of language barrier. These native English speakers can also rectify your mistakes, please don’t take that in your ego- take it sportingly and converse daily with them. At the end of the day one thing you have to keep in your mind is that they don’t have anything to learn from you- but you have learned from them. So, just follow their accent and body language attentively.

You can see the change within yourself in 12-13 weeks! Thank me later! HAHAAHA!

**As I have already mentioned the basic learning tips now let’s move our eyes into some “How to improve vocabulary for the Advanced English Learners”**

8. Make a Deep Study Habit:

Start studying from today, if possible start studying now onwards. This is a skill that can change your life completely. A report shows that if a person starts studying a particular subject for the next three years, regularly, then that person will come into the top 5% of people in the world. Just look how powerful studying is!

Start studying the more you will study the more you will come across new words and that will enrich your vocabulary. This will also help you to stand out from the crowd while speaking. There is no substitute for studying. You will not only gain vocabulary, you will learn a lot of things. If you don’t have anything to read then start reading newspaper,

You will gain knowledge about what is going on across the globe, you will come across a bunch of new words daily, and you will keep yourself updated. One more thing that whatever you study- study the things that draw your attention and interests otherwise you will become bored. And please don’t study for the sake of studying- study from your heart.

9. Start Memorising Things:

It is a bit difficult to follow, but you have to do it, if you want to improve your English Speaking skills. Actually there is no straight forward formula of remembering things. Everybody has different steps to memorise things, here I Can share the ways I remember the things, that might help you,

  • Read an article or blog and note down the important points in a notebook immediately.
  • After you finish reading the whole thing, go through the writing that you have written. Read the writing a couple of times and close the notebook and write down the same thing on another notebook, without looking into it.
  • Whenever you are writing, pronounce whatever you are writing.
  • And again do the same thing at night before you are going to sleep.

The above-mentioned method helped me a lot to memorise stuff and remembering is very important. If you don’t remember the things then how can you speak the newly learnt words?

10. Expose Yourself to English Vocabulary:

It has been seen in research that new English learners always tend to run away from English vocabulary. This is just because they take this as homework. You should never take this as homework. Learning spoken English is a journey and you should dive into that with interest.

You should expose yourself to English vocabulary a lot, Read everything you see in front of your eyes. For example you are travelling in a bus or in a car reading the hoardings that come in your journey. Whether you need it or not that doesn’t even matter but read. Even read the address that is given in a hoarding.

This will help you to overcome your fear of English speaking and this will also help you to improve your English vocabulary.

11. Move Out of Your Comfort Zone:

C’mon you have studied a lot now it’s time to check your improvement and for that you have to come out of your comfort zone and you should participate in public speaking or in group discussion. This will boost your confidence.

At the initial stage you will make mistakes, some people may laugh but you have to take that criticism and evolve yourself into a better version. You should not quit, you cannot afford to quit! You have come a long way and you have to complete your journey for your better future.

Every morning wake up, stand in front of the mirror and remind yourself that this is my journey and I have to win it at any cost. Believe me if you have determination-you will win and will be able to speak fluently in English.

If you make this possible, then just come back and leave a heart in the comment section and that will be enough for me! No thanks nothing- You fought the battle alone!

Now it might seem like a lot of hurdles to do all the things regularly in a routine way, in that case, you can take the help of an expert who will guide you to enhance your English speaking skills.
